THEN AND NOW by Rosalie M. Taylor

The Teacher

The greatest teacher I’ve ever known

Was the one who told me not

Where to go, but lighted a weed-filled path

So that I could find my way.

The teacher said that I could never be taught

all life-lessons experience has bought.

But she also said, “Remember this rule-

To learn only by experience

Makes you the Ultimate Fool.”

Things the teacher taught:

Listen to the small voice within

That tells you when to stop and to begin.

Remember and obey those over you.

Yet forget not, “To yourself be true.”

Every mighty long road has an end.

Go straight, but know when to bend.

Help from God as you study the text

In life’s book is the only way that man

Can hope to pass the final exam.
