THEN AND NOW by Rosalie M. Taylor

Lord Knows I’ve Tried

I’m trying to get out of this world alive.

But no matter how hard I push and strive,

No matter that I try and try,

I’ve come to believe, I’ll only leave when I die.

Thought if I kept up with the styles of the day

It would buy me more time to stay.

If I exercised right, thought politically right,

I could avoid the longest night.

Figured that I’d develop greater skill

All of life’s games I’d have more time to play–

Building relationships, gaining fortune maybe fame.

I know I could win if only I could stay.

So, I’ll continue to ignore my fate

As I await destiny’s inevitable date,

Let there be none left who can say I haven’t tried.

Lord, you know I spent a lifetime trying to get out of this world alive!
